Study Finds Coffee Drinkers Have Lower Risk of Death
Fri, 18 May 2012 14:00:00 EST
A new study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP, has found that older adults who drank coffee -- caffeinated or decaffeinated -- had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee.
Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Researchers caution that they can't be sure these associations mean that drinking coffee actually makes people live longer. The results of the study were published in the May 17, 2012, edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Neal Freedman, Ph.D., Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI, and his colleagues examined the association between coffee drinking and risk of death in 400,000 U.S. men and women ages 50 to 71 who participated in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. Information about coffee intake was collected once by questionnaire at study entry in 1995-1996. Coffee intake was assessed by self-report at a single time point and therefore might not reflect long-term patterns of intake. The participants were followed until the date they died or Dec. 31, 2008, whichever came first.
The researchers found that the association between coffee and reduction in risk of death increased with the amount of coffee consumed. Relative to men and women who did not drink coffee, those who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had approximately a 10% lower risk of death. Coffee drinking was not associated with cancer mortality among women, but there was a slight and only marginally statistically significant association of heavier coffee intake with increased risk of cancer death among men.
Freedman says, "Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in America, but the association between coffee consumption and risk of death has been unclear. We found coffee consumption to be associated with lower risk of death overall, and of death from a number of different causes. Although we cannot infer a causal relationship between coffee drinking and lower risk of death, we believe these results do provide some reassurance that coffee drinking does not adversely affect health."
Freedman also says, "The mechanism by which coffee protects against risk of death -- if indeed the finding reflects a causal relationship -- is not clear, because coffee contains more than 1,000 compounds that might potentially affect health. The most studied compound is caffeine, although our findings were similar in those who reported the majority of their coffee intake to be caffeinated or decaffeinated."
USA Today quotes cardiologist Steve Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic who tells the public to ignore the study's findings.

Sydney, Australia Chef Chase Kojima Experiments With Vegemite
Wed, 16 May 2012 22:00:00 EST
Vegemite has been a go-to snack in Australia for more than 90 years. But now Kraft is having to work hard to make sure that the younger generation gets introduced to the salty, yeasty spread. There has been resistance, as kids don't seem to be taking to Vegemite as their parents did. Some chefs have been experimenting with Vegemite. Chef Chase Kojima of Sokyo Restaurant
in Sydney was born in San Francisco.
He said he made the mistake of
spreading Vegemite on toast when
he first arrived in Australia and
thought it was awful (he thought
it would taste like chocolate).
Now he's using it in unusual ways. His latest dish is Moreton Bay bugs (a type of flathead lobster) served with burnt butter mayonnaise, passion fruit jelly and Vegemite croutons.
Chef Kojima says, "Being from the U.S., I didn't
understand Vegemite at first.
After experimenting with it in
my cooking, I can now appreciate
the flavor. It has similarities with
umami flavors,
very much like miso in Japanese
cooking."
WSJ's Rachel Pannett reports:
President Obama is no fan of Vegemite. He tried it during a trip to Australia. When asked by schoolchildren what he thought about Vegemite, he replied "It's horrible." After the Australian prime minister explained the origins of the spread and how first-timers shouldn't spread it too thickly on bread, President Obama replied, "So it's like a quasi-vegetable by-product paste that you smear on your toast for breakfast....Sounds good, doesn't it?"

The Most Expensive Minibar Items at Luxury Hotels
Wed, 16 May 2012 21:24:00 EST
The WSJ's Andrea Petersen did an interesting piece on the most expensive non-alcoholic minibar items sold in luxury hotels. Bal Harbour, Fla.
The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort in Florida offers
Popchips potato chips, salt and pepper flavor, for $9.00 an 8oz. bag.
The San Francisco Mandarin
Oriental offers Fleur de Sel
Caramel popcorn for $9. The
Boston Four Seasons offers a small bag of Roasted Salted Mixed nuts for
$8. But the most expensive item is at the The Peninsula Beverly Hills. It offers
10 chocolates nestled inside a special box shaped like the cap worn by the hotel's pages. It costs $80 dollars a box. The hotels say when you factor in the cost of labor and replacing food that was not eaten and went stale, that they don't make much money on these expensive extras. Take a look:

Sacha Baron Cohen Explains His Reasons for Making The Dictator, and Who the Character is Based On
Wed, 16 May 2012 17:13:00 EST
Sacha Baron Cohen is in Cannes for the Cannes Film Festival. He did an interview with The Today Show's Ann Curry. But what's unusual is that the did the interview as himself, not in character as Genereal Alaweed from his new film The Dictator. It was really windy on the terrace where they did the interview -- Sacha's hair is everywhere and Ann had to make a grab for her skirt.
Sacha explained why he finally decided to do an interview as himself: "Well, the movies that I did up till now, they involved real people. So we wanted to limit the exposure for, kind of, lawsuits. At the moment, I think I have the Guinness World Record for the most sued actor in history." He added, "But basically if people saw that I was me and that Borat was not a real person beforehand, they could injunct the movie and shut the movie down. This is a different kind of movie."
He also explained why he chose a Middle Eastern dictator as the star of the film and who the character is based on. Sacha said,
"Well, firstly it's a comedy movie, so the movie is there to be as funny as it can be...but the subjects of the satire are these preposterous dictators who are feared in their own countries and rule using violence and oppression but are ludicrous characters... And the great thing is at the moment, they're being overthrown. So anything you can do to mock them and undermine that kind of false authority I think is a positive thing." Take a look:

Skechers to Pay $40 Million to Settle Lawsuit With Government Over Fitness Shoes
Wed, 16 May 2012 14:00:00 EST
Skechers USA Inc. has agreed to
pay $40 million to settle the government's charges that Skechers
made false claims about
its fitness footwear. David Vladeck of
the Federal Trade Commission
said that Skechers made
unsubstantiated, false claims about its toning shoes.
The company made claims like
"Get in shape without ever
setting foot in the gym" and
"Make your bottom half your
better half." The rocker bottom
shoes do
not improve circulation
or make you lose weight.
Kim Kardashian appeared in
ads for the footwear which
were touted as having amazing
health benefits such as easy fat and weight loss.
The FTC said Skechers lied
about the study they used to
support their claims. In the study,
people actually gained weight wearing
the shoes, instead of losing weight as the

Elizabeth Banks Cover June Issue of Allure
Tue, 15 May 2012 23:41:00 EST
Elizabeth Banks covers the June 2012 issue of Allure. Elizabeth's latest movies include The Hunger Games and What to Expect When You're Expecting , which arrives in theaters this weekend. In the interview, Elizabeth talks about outearning her husband, her weights and roles and equality for actresses.
On Outearning Her Husband: " "Well, we're the first generation to do it. And it's very ingrained even in our DNA that men are hunter-gatherers who are meant to go off and provide. And that we are really meant to stay at home and have kids.... Let's be honest. Men love a second income. It gets them their boat and their vacations. They want their wives to work."
On Her Weight: ""It's not good to put in a magazine what I weigh because it's too little. People freak out when they hear what I weigh. They think, Oh, you're too skinny. But I ate a cupcake last night - and I eat broccoli. I work out with a trainer; she kicks my ass and my husband's ass two or three days a week."
On Women in Hollywood: "When you're young in this business, you don't realize it, but there are no superhero movies starring women! I was very idealistic. And so it was an adjustment knowing I was going into a movie and would be working just as hard as the male actors, and in some cases feeling I was more talented than they were-and knowing I was making a fraction of their salary. And knowing also that this is my reality going forward."

Lego Recreates Korean Landmark for Lego Architecture Series
Tue, 15 May 2012 23:24:00 EST
Lego Architecture has added its first Asian landmark. Lego is launching a set based on the the Gate of Exalted Ceremonies in Seoul, which is better known as the Sungnyemun. Sungnyemun has stood in the heart of South Korean capital since 1398 as one of the most complete examples of Joseon Dynasty architecture. It is listed as the country's foremost National Treasure.
In capturing the essence of Sungnyemun in Lego bricks, designer Adam Reed Tucker looked at the aesthetics rather than engineering, especially the use of colors, patterns and materials. Tucker says, "Sungnyemun survives as a symbolic marker of a lost place in time."
LEGO 21016 Sungnyemun will be launched officially at the Danish Pavilion during the Expo 2012 exhibition held in Yeosu, South Korea. It will be available for purchase from June 1 in Lego stores and online at shop.lego.com.

crazy with work and family lately. That's for sure. He stars in the mega-hit the Avengers and is now doing press for this new film.
Kristen said that Snow White
is a great story to tell right
now. If you're going to do
it today, Kristen says,
"you have to put her
in a dangerous world and see if
she can survive." Kristen
Charize said she saw great
potential in the retelling of
the story. She said the evil queen

the queen has no love and we should
feel sorry for her.

The cover is part of an article about "attachment parenting," a style of parenting which advocates extreme closeness between parent and child. If you thought helicopter parents were bad, attachment parents make them look distant and cold. Take a look:

Zynga May Be Plotting FarmVille Sequel or Major Upgrade
Sun, 13 May 2012 21:44:00 EST
Zynga may be plotting a sequel to FarmVille, its popular social game. TechCrunch reports that a game named Big Harvest is being tested in the Philippines. The new game has improved graphics, with lusher looking crops. TechCrunch says players in the upgraded game can turn harvested crops into feed. Player can also make food from their crops, such as turning the virtual milk and eggs into virtual pies. Zynga made $84.9 million in revenues from Farmville last quarter, so there is clearly still a lot of people playing it. Facebook players would likely welcome any improvements, but a name change away from the strongly branded FarmVille seems unlikely. Zynga did not comment on TechCrunch's Big Harvest report.

Natalie Portman, Justin Bieber, Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake Perform in SNL 100th Digital Short
Sun, 13 May 2012 16:44:00 EST
To celebrate having made 100 digital shorts, Digital Island -- Andy, Jorma, and Justin Bieber (an honorary member, perhaps?) -- put together a new digital short which takes a look back at their greatest hits. Remember "D*** in a Box?" Well, they took that theme and ran with it. When the new theme of the song was revealed, Justin exclaimed "Wait, what? That's disgusting!"
Digital Short superstars Shy Ronnie (Andy Samberg), Reba McEntire (Kenan Thompson), Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Fred Armisen) all made appearances. There were a lot of cameos, as well. Natalie Portman reprised her Angry Rap character with a nice life update ("Yeah I had a baby, but I'm still crazy"), Michael Bolton pulled out his memorable Jack Sparrow impersonation, and Jon Hamm showed up as the shirtless saxophone player, Sergio. Usher and Will Ferrell also popped in with their comments on the digital shorts. It's really funny. Take a look:

The Avengers Dominates Box Office for Second Straight Weekend
Sun, 13 May 2012 13:00:00 EST
The Avengers dominated the box office for a second consecutive weekend. The film, directed by Joss Whedon, followed up its massive $200 million opening weekend with a monster $103 million weekend. The film has now already grossed $373 million in the U.S. and has crossed the $1 billion mark when the foreign box office is added in. The Avengers will have to sink Battleship in order to win the box office for a third straight weekend.
Dark Shadows finished second and made $28 million. This was less than expected. Deadline says Dark Shadows was predicted to earn a minimum of $35 million. That prediction may have been made before strong word-of-mouth for The Avengers started dominating theater visits.
Dark Shadows was followed by Think Like a Man, The Hunger Games, The Lucky One, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and The Five-Year Engagement. You can see the complete box office report here.
