Every fashionista needs some wardrobe inspiration at some point. Magazines and blogs can only do so much even with fantastic high definition photography of the stars. If you want to get up close and personal with the most fabulous and influential pieces of fashion the best place to head is a museum. Here are some of the best permanent fashion exhibitions in the world.
V&A MuseumImage By: mbarrisonLocated in the heart of London's South Kensington the V&A houses the most extensive collection of fashion. Ranging from the 18th century right through to contemporary fashion with a micro collection of couture pieces this is the perfect place to learn about the artistic side of fashion. With special temporary exhibitions throughout the year like ‘Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950' and ‘Hollywood Costume' it acts almost like a library for the style conscious.
Design Museum – A celebration of design in all its forms, the Design Museum Collection is made up by over 2000 objects that range from the early Modernism of the 1900s to the cutting edge of contemporary design. With visiting exhibitions including the celebration of iconic shoe designer Christian Louboutin the museum in Shad Thames is the best place to explore fashion's design inspirations.
Metropolitan Museum of Art – The Costume Institute at Manhattan's famous Met Museum is world renowned. Housing a collection of more than 35,000 costumes and accessories which span five continents and as many centuries. It is here that you can truly experience the global nature of fashion. This collection also has the Anna Wintour stamp of approval as it is the inspiration for US Vogue's annual ball.
Musée Galliera – Located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris this museum displays exhibits of French fashion design and costume from the eighteenth century to the present day. The museum's holdings contain about 70,000 items including items worn by Marie Antoinette, Empress Josephine and Audrey Hepburn. It also features many designs by Paris's most famous couturiers.
